Family Law & Divorce Issues – For First Responders

As a first responder, you put your life on the line to keep our community safe. This calling requires you to give everything and it will inevitably take a toll on you – emotionally and physically. First responder marriages, or marriages in which at least one spouse serves as a police officer, firefighter, emergency medical technician (EMT) or related public-servant position, are at high risk for marital disharmony, infidelity and divorce. First responders work long hours, face frequent danger, witness countless traumatizing events and are at a higher risk for mental illness, substance abuse and suicide.

Hancock Law Firm is proud to help first responders who find themselves faced with family law issues.

Unfortunately, Florida firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics and EMTs  have unique problems when faced with divorce. Your chosen career saddles you with issues and situations not encountered by those in other career paths.  You may find that the sacrifices you make to live a life serving the community place you at a disadvantage in divorce.

Your work schedule and/or rotating shifts can make the normal custody and visitation plan nearly impossible since you don’t work a standard 9:00 am – 5:00 pm job or even a Monday – Friday job. Your job requires you to be more flexible than most other professions. You cannot leave your job to meet the school bus at 2:30 pm. You cannot be locked into inflexible alternating schedules. In order to make it work, you Parenting Plan must include a full  and reasonable understanding of the demands of your work schedule.

The special requirements of your career must be taken into consideration at all stages of the divorce process.

Hancock Law Firm understands and has dealt with the special situations that can arise in a first responder marriage. We understand the challenges your shift scheduled can create for parenting plans, child custody, and time- sharing. We realize how emotionally demanding your job can be. We want to help you achieve a fair and equitable division of property, including your pension.

Your service to our community should be seen as an excellent example of your integrity. We will point the Court and the opposing side toward the self -sacrificing nature of your profession and advocate for your best interest.

You work so hard to serve and protect us all.  Let Hancock Law Firm serve you now.
